BTEC and GCSE appeals process 2024

If after receiving your GCSE Maths and/or English or Level 2 or Level 3 Vocational Exam results you are dissatisfied and wish to appeal, please take the following into account:

• JCQ guidelines indicate that appeals are only considered by the awarding bodies under the following grounds:
  • a marking or moderation (or a review of marking/moderation) error has occurred; or
  • the awarding body did not apply its procedures consistently, properly or fairly.
• JCQ defines a marking or moderation error as:
  • A marking error is defined as the awarding of a mark which could not reasonably have been awarded given the evidence generated by the learner, the criteria against which learners’ performance is differentiated and any procedures of the awarding organisation in relation to marking, including in particular where the awarding of a mark is based on.
• JCQ defines a procedural error as:
  • A procedural error is defined as a moderation outcome which could not reasonably have been arrived at given the evidence generated by learners which was considered for the purpose of moderation, the centre’s marking of that evidence, the criteria against which learners’ performance is differentiated and any procedure of the awarding organisation in relation to moderation, including in particular where the outcome of moderation is based on.

Students can not appeal directly to the awarding bodies themselves – it must be done through the College. Should you feel that the above applies, or you are dissatisfied with the outcome of any other qualification that was internally assessed at the College please send an email with an explanation to [email protected]

Timelines and deadlines for centre reviews and appeals

• GCSE Maths and English: 5 September 2024
• Level 1 and Level 3 Vocational Exams: 5 September 2024

Remarks

The College will confirm its approach to re-marks following the publication of the results, but it is likely that the College will automatically request and pay for students who attain a Grade 3 and are within two marks of the Grade 4 boundary once published. The College can facilitate requests outside of this but will not cover the costs.
