Chay Nets Dream Coaching Role With Coventry City FC
Studied: BTEC Sport Levels 2 & 3
Progression: Coventry City FC Under 18s Coach
Chay Thompson has netted a dream career working as a coach at Championship Coventry City Football Club.
Here he tells us more about his journey which kicked off at Coventry College and has led to employment with his boyhood club.
How long were you at college and what did you study?
I was at college for a total of 4 years and studied Sport BTEC Levels 2 and 3.
How did your time at college help to shape your coaching career?
I really enjoyed my time at the College. As well as the Sport qualifications, the College also helped me to achieve FA Football Level 1 and 2 qualifications which set me on my career pathway. I progressed onto an apprenticeship which helped me to secure a full-time job.
What skills and experience did you develop at college to help you in your role?
The main thing I developed was the importance of communication. I always wanted to be involved in professional football and the College helped me to really develop my communication skills which I am still using in my coaching role today.
Do you have any advice for aspiring football coaches?
I think it’s important to be open-minded and have set values. It’s also great to be ambitious. I’d always wanted to work at Coventry City as a coach but I still want to progress further. My message to other learners would be ‘if I can do it why can’t you?’
As a big Coventry City fan, how does it feel to be working at the club you support?
When I joined the club, it was a proud moment for me and my family who have all been big fans for a number of years.
The club was on the brink not so long ago but to get to where it is now is an incredible achievement and everyone has played their part.
