The Role
You’ll support PE delivery in primary schools and assist coaching sessions to inspire people through sport.
You’ll support the health and wellbeing of children, families, and communities by supporting and delivering fun, inclusive, and engaging activities that inspire positive changes in physical activity habits. Additionally, you’ll develop technical and tactical sports.

- Planning and delivering programmes of physical activity for pupils, families and communities.
- Supporting children in the classroom.
- Supporting competitive sports events.
- Coordinating sports and physical activity related projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing additional support in the pool to children with SEND needs to ensure inclusivity of the programme.
- To support on organising community and competitive events.
- Supervise and support members of the public, ensuring their safety by complying with good H&S practice.
- To interact positively with customers adopting a friendly and professional approach at all times.
- To support the Company’s commitment to providing a safe environment for children, young people ad vulnerable adults, ensuring awareness of the Company’s Safeguarding Policy, Procedures and Practice Guidance, and to be vigilant, reporting any safeguarding concerns without delay.
Day to Day Activities
- Supporting sessions during school hours, afterschool and weekends.
- Supporting the delivery of high quality and inclusive PE lessons to pupils in schools in line with the requirements of national curriculum for PE and the profile of needs across the pupil population.
- Working across multiple sites (travel required to schools around Coventry, The Alan Higgs Centre and Xcel Centre in Coventry).
- Engaging with pupils in a fun and professional manner.
- Completing apprenticeship coursework and training.
- Supporting children in the classroom.
- Safeguard children at all times.
What You’ll Learn
You’ll attend College one day a week and learn how to:
- Design and deliver coaching programmes that focus on the acceleration of sustainable mastery of children’s psychomotor skills and wider physical education standards.
- How school sport coaches profile children’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development needs. They measure psychomotor, technical and tactical skills in a range of physical activity contexts drawn from the Department for Education’s National Curriculum to enable physical education targets to be agreed. These results are used to create a high-level curriculum plan that considers school term schedules and a ‘whole child’ development approach.
- Understand the different stakeholders in this environment including children, parents, carers, peers, support staff, such as SENCO and safeguarding officers, teaching assistants, teachers, head teachers and school boards. Wider networks include local authority teams and social services.
- Develop extensive technical and tactical sports knowledge and skills to design and deliver coaching programmes that engage, motivate and evolve participants’ skills and performance.
Requirements
- Minimum Level 3 qualification in a relevant field.
- Competent in literacy and numeracy to Level 2 (GCSE Grade 4)
- Experience of working with children.
- You must have held residency in England for the last three years and have the right to work in the UK.
- Enhanced DBS clearance (will be undertaken if successful).
- Ability to work unsociable hours including evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays.
- Ability to travel between sites.
- Passionate about working with children, young people and other members of the community
Skills
- Good communicator.
- Well organised and adaptable.
- Able to adapt approach to meet needs of the children.
- Knowledge or experience of sports and/or sports coaching.
- Confident undertaking basic maths and literacy tasks with groups of children based on the current national curriculum requirements.
Progression
After completing your apprenticeship, you’ll be perfectly set up to work as a sports coach directly within a school. You’ll use the skills and knowledge gained to plan and deliver exciting sports sessions, helping students develop their physical abilities and a love for sports. This role allows you to directly apply everything you’ve learned in a familiar environment, contributing to the school’s sports programmes.
While not holding a full teaching qualification, your Level 4 apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for becoming an unqualified PE teacher in a school. Many schools are happy to employ skilled sports coaches in this capacity, allowing you to lead PE lessons and contribute to the physical education of students, under the guidance of qualified staff.
Your Level 4 apprenticeship opens doors beyond just schools, offering many chances to work in the wider sports industry. You could become a coach for local sports clubs, manage community sports projects, or even take on leadership roles within sports development organisations. The skills in coaching, organisation, and leadership you’ve developed are highly valued across various parts of the UK sports sector.
